The Power of Trust-Based Philanthropy

Foundation: Gates Foundation

The MacKenzie Scott Foundation has donated more than $14 billion to more than 1,600 organizations around the world over the past 15 years, but the largest donation it has ever made was to India, the New York Times reports.

"It is time for a resounding call to reshape the way we perceive and practice philanthropy in India," the foundation's CEO, MacKenzie Scott, said in a statement.

"While the future of philanthropy in India holds tremendous promise, let us draw philanthropy and inspiration from global philanthropists like MacKenzie Scott, who have disrupted the sector with their fearless approach."

The Times of India notes that India has seen a "remarkable upswing in philanthropy" in the past decade, with private sector funding for social initiatives up from about $1 billion in 2017 to more than $1 million in 2022.

The largest giver on the list is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has donated more than $50 billion to date.

The Gates Foundation's giving to date is second only to the Giving Pledge by Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, which has donated more than $45 billion to date.
